Slughorn was a Slytherin during his time as a student at Hogwarts, and continued on as Potions professor there for many years. During his tenure, he also served as the Head of House Slytherin before his initial retirement, when he was replaced by Severus Snape. After Snape's disappearance from Hogwarts later on, Slughorn came back to replace him again, serving as Slytherin head until his final retirement many years after the events of the Harry Potter books.
