His lyrics provoked both the government and Islamic extremists. Who is this Berber songwriter and poet?
Answer Lounès Matoub
"They can kill me, but they will never silence me." Berber musician Matoub Lounes knew that his music and poetry would end him, but he kept on singing. His revolutionary songs were about human rights, Berber rights, tyranny, injustice, and secularism in Algeria. It's said that when he wrote a scathing parody of the Algerian national anthem, he told his sister: "They will kill me for this one." And he was right. Lounes was assassinated in 1998, with both Islamic terrorists and the Algerian government accusing the other of his death.
