Harriet Tubman is the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad, a secret network for escaped slaves fleeing the South before the Civil War. The Railroad had stations in all of these states except which?
Answer Alabama
The Underground Railroad's escape routes crossed through more than 25 states, from Florida to Wisconsin. But there were very few stations in the Deep South due to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. The Act authorized local governments to seize and return fleeing slaves and imposed severe punishments on those who abetted their escape. As a result, most of the slaves who obtained freedom through the Underground Railroad were from border states such as Kentucky, Virginia, and Maryland.
