Half the area of the main part of San Francisco Bay, Flathead Lake is a large freshwater lake bordered on the east by the Mission Mountains and on the west by the Salish Mountains. Where it is?

Flathead Lake is a remnant of what was once a much larger lake called Lake Missoula. It's currently 197 square miles in area, and has the distinction of being one of the cleanest lakes for its size and type. The closest city is Missoula, which is about 70 miles south.
