The surnames Kim, Lee, and Park are very common in South Korea, with more than 50 percent of the population having one of those three names. In fact, 10 million people – or a fifth of Koreans – go by the surname Kim, which dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. As surnames began to come into vogue, many Koreans adopted the names of nobility to give themselves a leg up in the social caste system.
