Grown on palm trees, this fruit is called a "salak," but it's more commonly known by its animal-inspired nickname. What is this fruit?

The snake fruit is technically known as salak or salacca zalacca, and is native to Indonesia. The fruit grows on the salak palm tree, sprouting off of the base of the tree in little clusters. The salak has a unique flavor that's both sweet and acidic.
