China broke out in song, as the Song dynasty took hold in the 10th century. Lasting from 960 to 1279 A.D., the Northern Song dynasty ruled from Kaifeng, their capital, uniting China under one rule. After an invasion by the Jin state, their rule moved to Hangzhou in the south. The Song dynasty was a powerful and fairly stable one, but not without politics and its eventual collapse.
