Although the first recipe for gingerbread can be traced all the way back to Greece in 2400 BC, it was the Germans around the 16th century who started the beloved tradition of creating gingerbread houses around Christmas. It is believed some of the popularity grew when the Brothers Grimm fairy tales became more popular, which included the story of Hansel and Gretel.
