Getting this right can make or break your lawn. What is the ideal length at which to cut cool-season grass?

Answer 2.5 inches

Cool-season grasses, most often found in areas with four seasons, include perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, tall or fine fescue, and creeping bentgrass to name a few. You generally want to cut these species of grass at 2.5 inches. Whenever you mow, you should take only a third of the grass blade off the top, so cutting whenever it grows to around 3 2/3 inches is optimal.
