Gustave Eiffel pitched his idea for the design first to the city of Barcelona, but he was turned down. Even Paris only meant for the tower to be temporary, but it became an iconic landmark of the city. At least Barcelona still has Gaudi's famous cathedral, La Sagrada Familia.
