From where did the tradition of decorating with poinsettias originate?

Poinsettias, native to Mexico, have a long tradition in the Aztec culture. In 1828, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Poinsett, brought the plant to America. It soon became a holiday mainstay, possibly due to the star-like shape of the leaves. There is also a Mexican legend that ties the poinsettia to Christmas.
