A loyal friend to Dickens, Grip was a pet raven, and he even appeared as a character in one of his most famous novels, Barnaby Rudge. In a letter to a friend, Dickens once wrote that he wanted the lead character in that book to be “always in company with a pet raven, who is immeasurably more knowing than himself". Turns out he thought ravens were geniuses like him.
