Kahlo contracted polio when she was just six years old, which was the beginning of her long life of disability. Polio made one of her legs shorter and thinner than the other, resulting in a limp that got her bullied in school. She wore long colorful skirts to hide the injury. When she was 18, she was also involved in a car accident that shattered many bones, including her spinal column, and resulted in 35 operations and chronic pain for the rest of her life. It was during her recovery process that Kahlo began to paint.
