When a perp enters and/or leaves a crime scene, he/she leaves trace evidence behind in the form of hair, fibers, latent prints, DNA, etc. He/she might also pick up some evidence from the victim. This transfer of materials is called Locard’s Exchange Principle. Without it, forensic science would not exist.
