Originally called Edwinton after a supporter of the transcontinental railroad, Bismarck was renamed only a year later after German statesman and the prince of Bismarck, Otto Von Bismarck, to draw German immigrants and investors to the area. The state capital was the site of Lewis and Clark's crossing of the Missouri and its capitol grounds served as the scene of an epic snow angel party in February of 2007. 8,962 participants simultaneously made snow angels, earning the city a Guinness World Record.
