As motor vehicles started taking over the road, safe traffic necessitated pedestrian crossing signs. The first crosswalk was installed at Bridge Street in Westminster, London, in 1868. Proposed by railway engineer, John Peak Knight, the idea kicked off, and pedestrians have been crossing much more safely ever since.
