Standing 443 feet tall, when the London Eye – also known as the Millenium Wheel – was first built in 1999, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at the time (Ain Dubai Ferris Wheel in Dubai has since outdone it by a long shot at 820 feet). The Ferris wheel was built for the new millennium, opening along the South Bank of the River Thames and "seeing" 3 million visitors annually.
