Due to the misuse of drugs, Elvis had quickly gained weight and developed glaucoma, an enlarged colon, liver damage and high blood pressure. His fiance, Ginger Alden, found him on the bathroom floor, stiffened and unconscious. He was pronounced dead on August 16, 1977. An autopsy revealed that a sudden, violent cardiac arrest due to straining on the toilet was the cause of death. He was buried next to his mother. Following attempts to steal his body, both bodies were moved to a more secure location within the Graceland compound.
