In addition to acclaimed performances by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, Thelma and Louise was Brad Pitt's star-turning cinematic debut. But before Pitt signed, the role of Thelma's love interest J.D. almost went to several other actors. William Baldwin was cast first but later dropped out; Christian Slater nearly got it; Mark Ruffalo tried out; George Clooney auditioned five times to no avail; and Robert Downey Jr. actually got the part — until director Ridley Scott deemed him too short for Geena Davis. Eventually, it was Davis herself who handpicked Pitt for the part.
