In addition to its acclaimed performances by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, Thelma and Louise was Brad Pitt's star-turning cinematic debut. But the role of Thelma's love interest J.D. almost went to several other actors before Pitt signed on: William Baldwin was cast first but later dropped out; Christian Slater nearly got it; Mark Ruffalo tried out; George Clooney auditioned five times to no avail; and Robert Downey Jr. actually was cast — until director Ridley Scott deemed him too short for Geena Davis. Eventually, it was Geena Davis herself who handpicked Brad Pitt for the part.
