Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar in 1946. One of the greatest showmen in all rock history, Mercury had a flamboyant stage persona that belied the shy person underneath. He is admired for his astounding vocal range. Sadly, Mercury died of AIDS-related pneumonia at age 45.
