Bell ringers have been going strong for Salvation Army since the early 1890s. Initially, the charitable organization solicited donations via this campaign to supply needy families with Christmas meals. Just to get a sense of how far they've come, Salvation Army raised nearly $150 million in its 125th Red Kettle campaign in 2015. Proceeds go to "food, shelter and social services to nearly 30 million Americans" the official site notes.
