Out of war comes an attempt at peace. The United Nations formed in 1945 when the United Nations Charter was drawn up in San Francisco. Headed by reps from the U.S., the U.K., France, China, and the Soviet Union, the charter was signed by fifty countries (and later by Poland, making 51 original Member States). Its goals were to develop friendly relations and international cooperation, maintain peace and security, and to serve global harmony.
