He started his swindling career in the 1920s by pretending to be a Broadway producer and persuading people to invest in made-up productions. But the Eiffel Tower con became his most notorious caper. He conned metal scrap iron dealers into submitting bids for the Eiffel Tower, claiming the government intended to tear it down. Shockingly, after Lustig fled with his money, his mark didn't report the ruse to the police, likely out of embarrassment, which allowed the con man to return not a half a year later and sell the Eiffel Tower a second time.
