James Buchanan (1791–1868) is not among the most celebrated figures to ever occupy the Oval Office; in fact, many consider him the worst president in U.S. history. After losing to Lincoln at the end of his first term in 1860, Buchanan set the low bar for lame-duck presidencies, pretty much just sitting back and watching as seven southern states seceded from the Union. The Civil War broke out less than a month after Buchanan left office.
