Can you name this troubled star of old Hollywood?

Answer Frances Farmer

Frances Farmer had an enviable start to her Hollywood career, signing a seven-picture Paramount deal at age 22 in 1935 and starring alongside Bing Crosby the following year. But soon thereafter, Farmer's world began to crumble; ultimately, she lived a life filled with mental institutions, alcoholism and disloyal relations, as depicted in the 1982 film, 'Frances'. However, one sordid detail about Farmer's life represented in the film - that she underwent a lobotomy while a mental patient at Washington's Western State Hospital - turned out to be false. Years after the film's release, the author of 'Shadowland', the 1979 book on which the film was based, admitted that the lobotomy was fictionalized - despite the fact that the book had been marketed as non-fiction.
