Born Volodymyr Palahniuk, Jack Palance was the child of Ukrainian immigrants and grew up in Pennsylvania's coal mining country. Before becoming an actor, Palance was a professional heavyweight boxer who fought under the name Jack Brazzo. After winning his first 15 fights, Palance's boxing career came to an abrupt halt when he decided to enlist at the outbreak of WWII. While training as a bomber pilot, Palance's plane crashed and burned, leaving him severely wounded and burned. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
