Can you name this patriarch of a celebrated Hollywood family?

Answer Henry Fonda

Screen legend Henry Fonda (1905-1982) is remembered for his compelling portrayals of the decent common man standing up for justice in films like 'You Only Live Once' (1937), 'Young Mr. Lincoln' (1939), and 'The Grapes of Wrath' (1940), for which he received an Oscar nomination. In real life, however, Fonda was darker and more complex. His daughter, actress Jane Fonda, has described him as an emotionally distant parent and claims that she only saw him cry once, when Franklin D. Roosevelt died. Fonda himself said that he "wasn't a good father." A renowned womanizer, Fonda's emotionally tumultuous relationships included five marriages and many affairs. In 1949, Fonda's second wife Frances, the mother of Jane and younger brother, actor Peter Fonda, committed suicide in the psychiatric hospital where she'd been undergoing treatment for four months following his announcement that he wanted a divorce in order to marry his 20-year old mistress. Fonda, who went on to marry the mistress, kept the suicide a secret from their children for years. Decades later, Fonda and Jane worked together for the first time in 'On Golden Pond' (1981). Jane had bought the rights to the story about an emotionally distant father with the hope that Fonda would play the role and the project would help heal their relationship. It did, and Fonda went on to receive his first and final Academy Award. Too ill to attend, Jane accepted the award on his behalf.
