Like that sinister image of the fast-moving fin rising above the water, or the dread-inducing Duuun dun … duuun dun… of the John Williams score, the Jaws theatrical poster has become a cultural touchstone signifying danger. To prepare for his illustration, first commissioned for the paperback cover of the Peter Benchley novel on which the film is based, Kastel dropped by the American Museum of Natural History to study and photograph a few stuffed sharks. A Wilhelmina model was paid $35 to pose as the skinny-dipping swimmer, laying across two stools and simulating a swimming motion.
