Invented in 1837, the Cooke and Wheatstone telegraph machine was first commercial model and the most widely used needle-type telegraph. The machine received messages via pulses of electric current sent through overhead wires from a telegraph station in another location. The arriving signals made the needle pointers move toward letters electromagnetically.
