Having experienced the Korean War in all its ugliness, Hwang Sok-yong entered a Buddhist monastery, where he published his first book of poetry. Afterward, he helped drive the democracy movement and was imprisoned for years, where he wrote many other books of poetry. Amongst his works are Ten Thousand Lives and The Sound of My Waves.
