The activist monk, Ko Un, is considered one of South Korea's greatest living writers. Having experienced the Korean War in all its ugliness, he entered a Buddhist monastery, where he published his first book of poetry. Afterwards, he helped drive the democracy movement and was imprisoned for years, where he wrote many other books of poetry. Amongst his works are Ten Thousand Lives and The Sound of My Waves.
