Blacksmiths used what tool to weld metal together?

During the Middle Ages, blacksmiths became a very important part of civilization. They fashioned everything from horse shoes to swords and armor. They fused the metal together the same way they bent it: through the use of fire and a hammer. They would heat the metal up to where it appeared on fire, and then they would use their hammer to bend it and weld it to other metal pieces.
