Black Death took out this empire, but in its heyday, it was the largest contiguous empire the world has ever seen. This was thanks to military tactics that included placing dummies on horses to make their troops seem larger than life.
Answer Mongol Empire
The Mongols knew how to war. Genghis Khan led the way in expanding the empire into the largest contiguous empire in history, covering sixteen percent of the world's land (9.15 million square miles) and a quarter of its population (110 million people). His success was largely due to military tactics, like making his forces appear bigger, with warriors leading multiple horses topped with dummies into campaigns and tying sticks to the tails, in order to kick up dust clouds. Too bad the Mongols were no match for 14th century Black Death.
