The Dutch colony of New Netherland existed between 1621 and 1664 and originally grew up around the Hudson River, with its chief port at New Amsterdam - eventually New York City. Though the English took New Netherland in the Second Anglo-Dutch War, in the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch took back New Amsterdam for a brief period between 1673 and 1674, when they were ultimately forced to give it back to the English in the Treaty of Westminster.
