At what point in history did welding first begin?

The earliest examples of welding date back over 2,000 years ago to the Bronze Age. One of the oldest examples found was a gold box with lap joints pressure-welded together. Obviously, modern-day welding as we know it wasn't invented fully until the 1800s.
