At the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution, legend has it that Col. Israel Putnam ordered his troops to hold their fire until the British were close so the Americans could conserve ammo. Col. Putnam's is supposed to have specifically ordered his men: "Don't fire till you see the ___ of their eyes."
