At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, why did slalom skier and would-be gold medalist Karl Schranz get disqualified?
Answer He missed two gates.
The slalom course was foggy that day, my friend. Here's what happened: Schranz did claim a course patrolman ran out in front of him; it was corroborated by others, and he got a do-over. On his second run, he bested superstar Killy only to have gold medal-winning time voided since he missed the first two gates — on his FIRST run, BEFORE the patrolman allegedly ran out in front of him. Ouch. (Schranz would go on to be ejected from the 1972 games too. Double ouch.)
