At Jefferson Davis's suggestion, in 1855 Congress bought some of these animals from Egypt for the Southwest

A total of 33 Egyptian camels were brought to the Southwest, where they were tested for possible military uses. The Civil War put a halt to the program; after the war, most of the animals were sold at auction.
