Norm Peterson's full name is Hilary Norman "Norm" Peterson - it's explained that he's named after his grandfather Hilary. Along with Sam and Carla, Norm is one of only three characters to appear in every episode of Cheers. Norm also made appearances on Wings and Frasier.
