As one of the first civilizations to invent writing, what is the ancient Egyptian form called?

It took several hundred years – and the discovery of the Rosetta stone – for hieroglyphics to be deciphered, but Jean-François Champollion finally cracked the code in 1822. Meaning "the god's words" in Egyptian and "sacred carving" in Greek, symbols sometimes represent the exact figures they depict and other times are sound-based. No wonder they were hard to crack.
