In 1960, The New York Times published a full-page advertisement taken out by supporters of Martin Luther King, Jr. that criticized the police in Montgomery, Alabama. The ad, however, had a few minor inaccuracies. The police commissioner sued the Times for defamation, but the Supreme Court ruled the defendant must know the claim was false for it to be defamation. On the 50th anniversary of the ruling in 2014, the Times released an editorial in which it laid out the rationale for the Supreme Court decision.
