Where did the asymmetrical board games known as halatafl - also known as fox games - originate?
Answer Scandinavia
Dating back to at least the 14th century, halatafl (Old Norse for "tail board") is first mentioned in writing in the Icelandic Grettis saga. Its roots are likely in an even older Scandinavian game, Viking favorite tafl. Variations on halatafl's hole and peg format exist all over the globe, including France (le renard et les poules), the Netherlands (schaap en wolf), Nepal (bagh-chal), and Slovakia (vlci a ovce). In England, fox and geese was among Queen Victoria's favorite pastimes.
