This tradition, popular in many central European countries, can be traced to the times before Christians settled the area. The 12 courses are meant to represent the 12 months of the year. As a way to fast during the Navitiy, no eggs, milk or meat will be in any of the dishes. Although the tradition may have spread to other countries, Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus are the ones most associated with the tradition.
