Although Christmas stockings today are often stuffed with toys as well as popular holiday-inspired candy, the traditional stockings were filled with oranges, nuts and candy which was often chocolate money. The oranges were given because they were seen as a treat before they became so widely available. They also symbolized the gold left by St. Nicholas in his legends, as do the chocolate coins.
