The Nutcracker was composed by that other famous Russian ballet composer, Tchaikovsky. Although Tchaikovsky also composed a ballet based on Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev's is arguably more famous. The two were almost contemporaries - Tchaikovsky died when Prokofiev was only 2 years old.
