During season 12 of Gunsmoke, the series began experiencing low ratings, and was actually cancelled by the head of CBS. However, a barrage of fanmail and letters of protest (as well as pressure from his own wife) convinced CBS chief executive William S. Paley to reinstate the show for another season, which then turned into 7 more.
