In 1961 Belize's original capital city of Belize City was hit with a hurricane that did extensive damage. Construction began in 1966, and was completed in 1970, on the new national capital of Belmopan, roughly 50 miles inland from the ocean. Belize City remains the country's most populous city and commercial center.
