According the book "Game of Shadows," when did Barry Bonds begin boosting his baseball career with steroids?

Answer 1998

Bonds would go on to shatter Hank Aaron's all-time home run record in 2007, aided by performance-enhancing drugs. When fashion designer Marc Ecko won Bonds' record-breaking long ball, he took a vote on whether he should send it to the Baseball Hall of Fame, permanently brand it with an asterisk, or shoot it into space. (He branded it and sent it to Cooperstown, much to Bonds' anger.)
