Even though Otterhounds have been known since at least the mid-19th century, they have never been a particularly popular dog breed. Coincidentally, the practice of otter hunting (the primary purpose of this breed) dramatically declined during the 20th century. As a result, the Otterhound has been designated a Vulnerable Native Breed by the UK Kennel Club with only 600 animals currently living worldwide.
